A stands for Appointments. Two NLRB seats filled by President Obama.
What does all of this really spell? Some may say its the moon alignment for the labor movement to right the "injustice" that is long overdue.
Other observes may say the pieces of the strategic EFCA puzzle are falling into place. Just like in the game of Tetris, the experienced player knows that to the uninformed eye the shapes may not always appear to fit so snuggly.
But, to those following the current events with EFCA the "game" is far from over.
Let's break each game piece down.
It is a given that organized labor and elected officials including President Obama support the passage of EFCA. It is, one can say, more than just an "e"ndorsement it is according to Senator Ensign "a game-changer".
On April 28th President Obama named Mary Beth Maxwell a senior advisor to Secretary of Labor, Hilda Solis. Why "c"oncern?
Hilda Solis was a Board member of the advocacy group American Rights at Work and Mary Beth Maxwell was the Executive Director. The purpose of this organization was to pass EFCA.
"Why Can't America Have Human Rights?" A
speech delivered by Ms. Maxwell in 2006 called for an full investigation of the U.S. as defined by the United Nations as a violator of workers rights.
She stated that "we have a crisis around workers rights right now in our country...the legal system in the U.S completely fails to protect workers rights, completely violates international standards of human rights. We have to make the connection between workers rights and human rights. We have to change the law in the United States."
How does Mary Beth Maxwell, as senior advisor to Secretary of Labor, Hilda Solis make recommendations. Simple...passage of the Employee Free Choice Act!
Ah. Yet another Tetris piece falls strategically into place.
let's not stop...one more letter to unscramble. The "A" for Appointments.
The two recent Presidential National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) appointments include, Craig Becker, a lawyer from the SEIU and the AFL-CIO and, Mark Pearce, a career private practice labor law attorney. Both have been endorsed (remember the letter "E" in EFCA) by lorganized abor and exulted by the President the AFL-CIO, John Sweeny.
Now that you've read one interpretation of EFCA you can fill in the letter "F". While you're piecing everything together, don't forget about Arlen Specter who is now a Democrat. And, the yet to be determined senate seat between Al Franken (D-MI) & Norm Coleman (R-MI).
Another Tetris piece to keep at the forefront is Senate Majority Leader Reid who will decide when to fulfill his promise to deliver EFCA to President Obama.
To keep the game interesting I'll let you decide for your self how many letters follow the "F" in EFCA.
One suggestion to use might be the word Freedom. Freedom to choose. Freedom to fairly compete. Freedom to receive compensation based on merit and performance. Freedom to operate a business in a market driven economy with a spirit of individualsim driven by hard work, dreams, aspirations, risk, discipline, and yes, even a bit of luck!
EFCA will strip away the very Freedom that makes our country great. EFCA is based on a collectivism ideology - a direct collision with the rewards of individulistic viewpoints. Passing EFCA will rewrite the founding principles created by our country's founding fathers.
The "F" is EFCA is the one letter to fear the most.
